What Is It?

Penile curvature is called Peyronie’s Disease by medical professionals. It is caused by scar tissue within the erectile tissue that forms the shape of the penis.

Curvature is most obvious during an erection. The curvature may be so severe that penetration during intercourse is painful or impossible.

The condition occurs in men of all ages.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease

Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease aren’t consistent, varying from one patient to another. However, the following symptoms, especially in combination, indicate the presence of the disease:

• Inability to achieve penetration during intercourse
• Painful intercourse
• Erectile dysfunction
• Painful erections
• A lump of thickening of the penile shaft

How Is Peyronie’s Disease treated?

Urologists recommend no treatment unless the condition interferes with an active, healthy sex life.
In severe cases, medications and vitamins can be injected into the penis, but tests reveal that this therapy has only moderate rates of success.

Surgical options include:

• Removal of the scar tissue (penile plaque) and correction of the curvature.
• Insertion of a penile implant/prosthesis.

Peyronie’s Disease is more common than most of us realize, and it’s a condition that can be addressed medically, through sexual counseling or surgically depending on the severity of the condition and the preferences of the patient.
