Women’s Wellness: Let’s Talk About Female Sexual Health

Tiffany Walther, our Women’s Wellness program manager

Many women assume that urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, painful sex and other discomforts are just part of aging. While it’s true that hormonal changes can contribute to all of these common concerns, women don’t have to suffer in silence when advanced treatments are available at Urology Austin.

“Women suffer from urinary tract infections, urine leakage, and other urinary issues that are often influenced by vaginal health,” says UA’s Dr. Grady Bruce. “In fact, vaginal health is the most important factor for women who have recurrent urinary tract infections.”

Women’s Wellness is the main focus of Dr. Bruce’s practice, where two-thirds of his patient base are female. Additionally, many of the male patients who visit Urology Austin have a significant other who can benefit from Women’s Wellness services.

Urology Austin’s Women’s Wellness services include two state-of-the-art treatments that can dramatically improve vaginal health, which can likewise improve many common urological conditions in women. Vaginal rejuvenation works by stimulating blood flow and inducing new collagen and elastin formation in vaginal tissues. Improving vaginal health through vaginal rejuvenation often has a dramatic impact on urinary conditions, such as urine leakage and recurrent UTIs.

“The vagina is part of your skin, just like the skin of your face,” says Dr. Bruce. “We all see ads for laser treatments for facial rejuvenation, and these services are very popular because they work. The same types of treatments work for the vaginal tissue as well. Women do focus on taking care of their skin, but they are often surprised to learn that vaginal rejuvenation services are also an option.”

Because early prevention is the best option, the ideal age to begin vaginal rejuvenation treatment is when a woman first begins to notice symptoms of sexual or urinary dysfunction. However, postpartum and post-menopausal women of all ages can benefit from the two FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment options provided at Urology Austin’s Women’s Wellness.

  • TempSure Vitalia uses radio frequency waves to treat women with mild vaginal conditions and symptoms. This treatment option is ideal for women experiencing perimenopause symptoms regardless of their age.
  • MonaLisa Touch uses a CO2 laser to treat vaginal conditions. This treatment is recommended for women who have more advanced and/or severe vaginal symptoms related to lubrication, vaginal atrophy, painful sex, urinary incontinence, extreme dryness and other concerns.

At Urology Austin, we encourage all women to feel comfortable talking to their urologist about their sexual health, as many women tell us that these treatments have dramatically improved their quality of life.
