New Automated Urinalysis System: AutoUA at Urology Austin
At Urology Austin, we’re committed to delivering accurate answers as quickly as possible so you can get the right care without unnecessary delays. To support that goal, we’ve added the AutoUA system to our diagnostic testing capabilities. Your provider may recommend this test as part of your evaluation.
What Is AutoUA?
AutoUA is an advanced urinalysis platform that provides a highly detailed first look at your urine. Unlike traditional dipstick tests or manual analysis, AutoUA uses advanced imaging technology to identify bacteria, white blood cells, red blood cells, and other signs of infection or inflammation with greater precision.
How the Testing Process Works
AutoUA allows us to take a step-by-step approach to testing based on what your sample shows:
- Detailed Microscopy. If the initial screen detects red or white blood cells or signs of infection, your sample may be sent for detailed microscopic analysis. This allows the lab to count abnormal cells accurately and follow established medical guidelines, especially when blood in the urine is present.
- PCR Testing. If specific infection indicators are found and you have symptoms, recurrent infections, or are preparing for surgery, your provider may order PCR testing. This molecular test looks for bacterial DNA, making it faster and more sensitive than traditional urine cultures. It helps identify the exact bacteria causing the infection and the antibiotics most likely to treat it effectively. This test may be completed in the Urology Austin laboratory or sent to Mokan.
- Urine Culture. In some cases, your sample may be sent to Clinical Pathology Laboratories to grow a urine culture. This process helps confirm the presence of bacteria and determine which antibiotics are most effective for a specific strain.
How This Benefits You
Waiting for test results can be stressful. This tiered testing approach is designed to move efficiently from screening to deeper analysis only when needed. The result is a faster, more accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
If you have questions about your test or your results, your Urology Austin provider is always available to discuss them with you during your visit.
AutoUA Billing & Testing FAQ
We understand that seeing a new or unfamiliar charge on your bill can raise questions. Below are answers to the most common questions patients ask about AutoUA testing.
AutoUA is an advanced urine testing system that gives your provider a much more detailed and accurate look at what may be causing your symptoms. Unlike older “dipstick” tests, AutoUA uses advanced imaging and, when needed, DNA-based testing to more precisely identify infections and inflammation.
Traditional urine tests provide a basic yes-or-no result for infection. AutoUA is designed to deliver a higher level of accuracy by identifying specific bacteria and, when necessary, the most effective antibiotics. This approach helps your provider choose the right treatment the first time and can reduce delays, repeat visits, or ineffective medications.
AutoUA uses a tiered testing approach, meaning deeper testing is only performed if your initial results show it is medically necessary.
For example:
• Some patients only need the initial advanced screen.
• Others may require additional testing, such as DNA-based PCR analysis or a urine culture, depending on what is detected.
Because each test is based on individual results, charges can vary.
Depending on your results, certain portions of the testing may be completed by specialized laboratory partners to ensure the highest accuracy:
• Mokan may perform DNA-based PCR testing.
• Clinical Pathology Laboratories may perform urine cultures.
Your provider ordered this testing to support a fast, accurate diagnosis tailored to your needs.
AutoUA is designed to automatically trigger additional testing only if a potential issue is detected in your initial sample. This allows your care team to move forward with the correct treatment right away, without asking you to return for another visit or wait days for answers.
Your concern is completely understandable. AutoUA is used because it often helps patients avoid multiple rounds of antibiotics or repeated testing. If you would like a detailed review of your bill or how your insurance processed the charges, our billing team is happy to help.
For questions about why a specific test was medically necessary for your situation, we can also arrange for a member of your Urology Austin care team to follow up with you directly. To reach us, call 512-788-9688
