Young and Healthy? There’s Still a Risk: What to Know About Testicular Cancer

Author: Nick Freidberg, M.D.

When most people think about cancer risk, they often associate it with getting older. But testicular cancer tells a different story. In fact, it’s one of the most common cancers affecting younger men, especially between the ages of 17 and 34.

That’s why paying attention to testicular health matters, even if you feel healthy, active, and too young to worry about cancer.

Many men who experience testicular cancer say the same thing afterward:
“I didn’t think it could happen to me.”

The good news? Testicular cancer is highly treatable, especially when caught early. Early-stage testicular cancer has a 99% five-year survival rate. This blog covers why testicular health matters, what to look for, risk factors, and when to see a doctor.

Why Testicular Health Matters at Every Age

Your testicles play a major role in overall health throughout your life. They are responsible for:

  • Producing sperm and supporting fertility
  • Producing testosterone, which affects energy, mood, bone health, muscle mass, sex drive, and erectile function
  • Serving as an indicator of overall hormonal and physical health

When something changes, your body often gives subtle warning signs. The key is recognizing when something feels different and knowing when to seek care.

Why Early Detection Matters

Like many cancers, early detection can dramatically improve outcomes. When testicular cancer is caught before it spreads, surgery alone is often curative.

However, more advanced cases may require:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • More extensive surgery

That’s why awareness and regular self-checks can make a major difference.

What to Look For During a Testicular Self-Exam

The recommendation is to become familiar with your normal anatomy and perform a self-exam about once a month. During a self-exam, gently roll one testicle at a time between your fingers and thumb. You’re checking for:

  • Hard lumps or bumps
  • Changes in size
  • Changes in shape or consistency
  • New swelling or heaviness

A healthy testicle should feel smooth without firm masses.  Some natural structures and small differences in anatomy are completely normal. The important thing is noticing what’s new or different for you.

Common Symptoms Men Shouldn’t Ignore

Not every symptom means cancer, but certain changes should never be ignored, including:

  • A painless lump
  • Persistent swelling
  • A feeling of heaviness
  • Sudden size changes
  • Ongoing discomfort or aching

Although only about 2% of testicular lumps turn out to be cancerous, any abnormal finding should still be evaluated by a medical professional.

Understanding Risk Factors

Some men may have a higher risk of developing testicular cancer. Risk factors include:

  • Family history of testicular cancer
  • Personal history of testicular cancer
  • Undescended testicle (cryptorchidism)
  • Infertility
  • Certain genetic or developmental conditions

It’s Not “Embarrassing.” It’s Important.

One of the biggest barriers to early detection is hesitation. Many men avoid talking about testicular pain, lumps, or sexual health concerns because they feel uncomfortable or assume symptoms will go away.

At Urology Austin, these conversations are routine and judgment-free.

We know it can be a challenging subject.  But it’s something we do all day, every day, and we take pride in respecting our patients and making them feel comfortable.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • A new lump or bump
  • Persistent pain
  • Swelling
  • Significant size changes
  • Unexplained heaviness or discomfort

And if you experience sudden, severe testicular pain, seek emergency care immediately, as it could be testicular torsion — a serious medical emergency.

The Bottom Line

Being young and healthy does not eliminate your risk for testicular cancer.

The good news is that awareness, self-exams, and early evaluation can lead to highly successful outcomes. Knowing what’s normal for your body and acting when something changes may make all the difference.

If something feels off, don’t wait.
